If you’ve ever had any health concerns or experienced less-than-optimal health, you know how frustrating it can be to figure out what you should do to get back to your radiant self. There’s so much conflicting information out there about how to get healthy, making it all too easy to get lost or overwhelmed with options.
I know just how you feel.
I used to struggle with digestive issues, skin problems, depression, and huge fluctuations in energy for years.
I went to doctors, naturopaths, acupuncturists, energy healers, massage therapists, and any health practitioner that I thought might be able to tell me what was wrong and how to fix it. They all gave good advice, and I learned a lot, but nothing really helped. Nothing lasted.
I was given list after list of things to do every day. With the best of intentions, I successfully did them for maybe 4 to 5 days (a week if I was super disciplined), but then got overwhelmed and stopped doing everything.
I had all these tools, all this information, but no idea how to integrate them into my life in a sustainable way. Sound familiar?
I didn’t trust my body. I was losing faith that my health practitioners (or anyone) could help me. I was utterly confused and unable to figure out what my body needed.
I tried everything my health care experts recommended.
- I grew my own food.
- I tried going on a vegetarian diet.
- I tried being a vegan.
- I tried raw food.
- I tried the Macrobiotic Diet.
- I tried the Elimination Diet to find my food sensitivities.
- I cut out gluten, dairy, meat, soy, sugar, processed foods, and all Nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, sweet peppers, chili peppers).
- I took a handful of vitamins and supplements every morning containing everything from micronutrients to Omega-3s to folic acid.
- I made power-smoothies packed full of every superfood you can imagine (the taste was, well, let’s just leave it at interesting).
- I did juice fasts, liver detoxes, colonics and….
You get the picture.
Everything had some positive effect, but nothing made a difference for long. I was utterly confused about what to eat.
Nothing seemed to work.
I still had massive skin breakouts that left scars, painful and embarrassing digestive issues, crazy mood swings, and blood sugar crashes similar to the meltdowns you’d expect from an overly tired 3-year old.
My self-confidence dwindled. I didn’t feel attractive or beautiful. My attitude sucked. I became complacent and was ready to accept that things might not get better, ever.
Little did I know, I was on the verge of a major breakthrough.
I was only one month into my professional Holistic Health Coach training program when my own health hit rock bottom.
After more than 7 years of struggling with various health issues and trying everything under the sun to fix it, my body had no natural rhythm, rhyme or reason of its own.
My body was totally burned out, cleaned out, detoxed out, stressed out, and unclear how it was supposed to react to yet another change I was forcing it to go through.
I was always hungry and never felt full. No matter how much amazing organic, homegrown, local and seasonal foods I ate, I still felt malnourished. I was dropping weight, and fast. People started asking me if I was eating enough. That really helped…
Then one day, while rocking out to music on my drive to work, something clicked. A voice welled up from deep inside and I literally shouted to my steering wheel, “I am open to receiving nourishment!”
I pulled over. I cried.
Of course! How did I not see it before!
I realized that I had closed down and flat out given up hope of figuring out how to regain my health. I wasn’t letting anything in: nourishment from food, love & support from others, or hope for a brighter and healthier future.
I had two life-changing realizations that day.
1. Everyone’s body has unique food needs
Despite all the healthy, organic, nutrient-packed foods I was consuming, maybe the foods I was eating just weren’t the right foods for my body.
2. Everything in our lives has an affect on our health
If my primary foods are out of whack, so am I. If I am stressed, lonely, emotional, consumed by negative thoughts, not moving my body or feeling disconnected from the world around me, it affects my physical health.
From that day forward, I began believing in my ability to heal myself, trusting in my intuitive wisdom, and discovering what foods worked best for my body.
My skin has cleared up, and I no longer suffer from scarring and painful acne. My digestion is strong, and I no longer have to even think about being bloated or constipated. My blood sugar levels are solid, and I no longer have to deal with the stresses of hypoglycemia. My outlook on life is pretty bright!
One of the things that became crystal clear to me through my experiences over the last 10 years is the importance of bio-individuality.
Plain and simple: there isn’t just one right way to think, feel, dress, dance, eat, communicate, live or love.
We are able to choose the things that work best for us and that make us feel good.
